New Choice Digital Research Finds 94% of Recipients Say Payout Choice Matters
The 2026 State of Consumer Payout Preferences pairs a national survey with real redemption behavior to show what happens when recipients get to choose how they get paid.

BROOMFIELD, CO — August 17, 2026 — , a digital disbursement platform for regulated industries, today released the 2026 State of Consumer Payout Preferences, research that combines a national survey of 1,567 U.S. adults with redemption behavior observed across thousands of live disbursement programs.
The finding at the center of it: 94% of recipients say choice in payout method matters when they receive funds. Most disbursement programs still pick one method and apply it to everyone, rather than offering the multi-method payout and digital payment options for recipients this research shows they want. The research shows what that costs.
More key findings:
88% say a no-fee payout option is important.
72% are more likely to choose a company that offers their preferred payout method.
68% are more likely to participate in a program when they can choose how they get paid.
58% say the current economy makes receiving money quickly more important than it used to be, and 47% say a two-week payout delay would cause financial strain.
57% say they would be dissatisfied receiving a check in the mail.
Together, the findings point to the same conclusion: payout modernization means letting recipients choose payment method, not defaulting to whatever is operationally easiest for the program.
Preference shifts with the size of the payout: digital prepaid holds an above-80% share on payouts under $500, then falls to 51% once the amount crosses that threshold, as recipients move toward physical options for larger sums. Preference also shifts with the menu itself, as gift card share drops from 67% to 36% when a digital wallet is added as an option alongside it.
"Every payout now becomes a relationship, not just a transaction," said Jay Grinde, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder at Choice Digital. "This research confirms that people want a say in how that promise gets kept, and that the choice you offer shapes whether they come back."
The report also covers what recipients rank as most important at the moment they receive funds, how preferences differ across program types, and a practical framework for flexible disbursement delivery — building a payout menu that fits a program without rebuilding the payment stack behind it.
